The Ultimate Michigan Road Trip: 9 Scenic Stops
There’s something magical about hitting the road in Michigan.
From the sandy shores of the Great Lakes to dense forests and charming small towns, this state is full of hidden gems.
I’ve done the drive more than once, and every time, I discover something new.
If you’re planning a road trip through the Mitten State, here are 9 scenic stops you won’t want to miss.
Trust me, each one is worth pulling over for.
1. Traverse City
Let’s start with a classic.
Traverse City has small-town charm with big-lake views.
From wineries to cherry orchards and a waterfront downtown that feels straight out of a movie, this place sets the tone for an epic trip.
I spent a few days here and could’ve stayed forever.
2. Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore
This is where the trip starts to feel surreal.
Massive sand dunes tower over Lake Michigan, giving you views that will literally stop you in your tracks.
Hike the Dune Climb or take the Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive—either way, the views are next-level.
Sunset here? Unreal.
3. Leland (Fishtown)
Leland is one of those blink-and-you’ll-miss-it towns that you’ll be glad you didn’t miss.
Fishtown is a row of old fishing shanties turned into shops and smoked fish spots right along the water.
It’s got that old-school coastal vibe you won’t find anywhere else in Michigan.
Get a sandwich at Village Cheese Shanty and thank me later.
4. Petoskey
This Northern Michigan gem is full of Victorian charm, lakefront beauty, and unique shops.
Don’t leave without hunting for a Petoskey stone on the beach—it’s like a little treasure hunt.
The downtown is walkable and cozy, and the sunsets over Little Traverse Bay are unreal.
5. Mackinac Island
You can’t do Michigan right without visiting Mackinac Island.
There are no cars allowed, just bikes and horse-drawn carriages.
The fudge is famous for a reason, but honestly, it’s the cliffside views, historic sites, and peaceful vibe that will win you over.
Stay overnight if you can—it feels like another world once the day-trippers leave.
6. Tahquamenon Falls
Head into the Upper Peninsula and stop at Tahquamenon Falls, one of the biggest waterfalls east of the Mississippi.
The Upper Falls are huge and dramatic, while the Lower Falls are great for exploring up close.
Bring water shoes if you want to splash around in the shallow areas.
This place is nature showing off.
7. Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore
This stretch of Lake Superior is like nothing else in the Midwest.
Think colorful sandstone cliffs, waterfalls, sea caves, and bright turquoise water that looks like it belongs in the Caribbean.
You can kayak, take a boat tour, or hike along the cliffs for the full experience.
Pictures don’t do it justice—you’ve got to see it for yourself.
8. Marquette
Marquette blends small-town friendliness with outdoorsy cool.
There’s hiking, breweries, and an awesome food scene.
I loved walking along the ore dock and watching the lake waves crash—there’s something rugged and calming about it.
If you’re a coffee lover, make sure to stop at Velodrome Coffee Co.
9. Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park
End your trip deep in the Upper Peninsula at the Porkies.
This is where Michigan gets wild in the best way.
You’ve got remote trails, inland lakes, waterfalls, and overlooks like Lake of the Clouds that’ll leave you speechless.
It’s peaceful, remote, and the perfect place to wrap up your adventure.
