Between the gigantic beer steins and much-beloved Chicken Dance (which the city of Cincinnati claims to do in the biggest way possible), it’s an experience you will never forget.

And don’t get me started on the food — giant pretzels, bratwurst and sauerkraut any Munich restaurant would envy.

Still, if you’re thinking true Oktoberfest and don’t want to travel the country, Zinzinnati is your destination.

2. Leavenworth Oktoberfest: Leavenworth, Washington

Set in the Cascade Mountains, Leavenworth is a Bavarian-style village that seems plucked from the heart of southern Germany.

I recall walking through this quaint town for the first time, struck at how authentically Bavarian it felt—the architecture and the festive atmosphere.

Leavenworth goes all out for Oktoberfest.

The festival lasts three weekends and features all the Oktoberfest staples: traditional tunes, German beer and a number of lederhosen that could outfit a small nation.

I had discovered Fredericksburg’s Oktoberfest on a Texas road trip, and it became one of my favorites.

The festival is family-friendly and boasts a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere that’s great if you want to experience the tradition without the throngs.

With local craft beer, tasty German fare and live polka music, it’s a standout event.

Plus the surrounding Texas Hill Country is beautiful in the fall, making Fredericksburg an excellent weekend escape.

5. Prince William’s German Market At The Bastille – Chicago, Illinois

If you’re out on the West Coast, Oktoberfest by the Bay in San Francisco stands out.

Held against the beautiful backdrop of San Francisco Bay, it offers a taste of Bavaria in the Golden State.

I’ll never forget going for the first time — it felt like the best combination of vibrant and chill, with gorgeous bay views setting the tone.

Of course, the festival includes traditional German music, dancing, and lots of beer.

What makes this Oktoberfest unique is the truly amazing location — there’s something just better about raising a stein with the sunset behind you over the water.
