New Year’s Travel Destinations USA: 7 Best Places to Celebrate and Start Fresh
When the clock strikes midnight and a new year starts, there is nothing quite like rejoicing somewhere that’s kind of magical.
For years now, I’ve made it a point to start my year in a new place, and each experience has been one to remember.
If you’re searching for the best places to travel in the US for New Year, you’ve come to the right place because I’m here to share destinations that offer excitement, adventure and memories that will last a lifetime.
1. New York City, Times Square energy
There is no place on earth quite like Times Square on New Year’s Eve.
But it would be disingenuous for me not to say that, cliché though it may be, seeing the ball drop in person is an experience you won’t forget.
There is electricity in the air — thousands of bodies coalesce, bundled in thick coats and scarves, waiting to count down to the moment.
With the arrival of autumn, the whole city becomes a playground of possibilities.
Before midnight comes, I enjoy walking around Central Park, taking in the holiday decorations and skating at the iconic Wollman Rink.
And let’s not eliminate the food — New York is a mix of flavors with everything from authentic Italian in Little Italy to a skyline view cocktail on a rooftop.
And while Times Square is all the buzz, don’t forget about Brooklyn or the Bronx.
Or a rooftop party where you can see the fireworks above the Brooklyn Bridge will provide you with the city’s allure without the jam-packed masses.
2. The Allure of Charleston, S.C.
If large cities aren’t your scene, Charleston is Southern charm meets refined revelry.
Imagine walking through cobblestoned streets aglow with twinkling fairy lights, festive tunes spilling out from 18th-century buildings.
I’ve passed a New Year’s Eve here sipping champagne beneath oak trees draped in Spanish moss and it seemed like something out of a romance novel.
Charleston sprawls, which seems ideal for musing about the past year.
One of the city’s farm-to-table restaurants is a must for dinner — fresh seafood and decadent desserts go well with a sparkling toast.
At midnight, gather with the locals in Waterfront Park, where fireworks sparkle across the Cooper River for a dreamy denouement to the evening.
3. Las Vegas, Nevada: The Bold Spirit
If you want to go big and bold for New Year’s, there’s no better place than Las Vegas.
The Strip turns into one big block party, with every casino and hotel throwing its own extravagance.
Once, I treated myself to tickets to an event on a rooftop overlooking the Bellagio fountains — worth every penny.
Anyone who’s been to Vegas knows how to do a show.
From celebrity concerts to fine dining experiences, you will feel like royalty when you ring in the new year!
And here’s another pro tip: Although the Strip gets all the attention, downtown has its own quirky appeal.
A light show and live music on Fremont Street provides as memorable a celebration, if a more relaxed one.
4. Lake Tahoe, California, Winter Wonderland
If you dream of snow-capped mountains and crackling fires for the perfect New Year’s, make Lake Tahoe your destination.
I will never forget waking up on New Year’s Day to the sun sparkling off fresh powder, ready to head to the slopes.
Ski during the day, curl up with hot cocoa by a roaring fire at night — my definition of paradise.
Tahoe also knows how to celebrate. The SnowGlobe Music Festival, which takes place every New Year’s Eve, attracts world-class D.J.s and a legion of music lovers to this winter getaway.
And for those who want a quieter experience, a moonlit sleigh ride through the woods will have you feeling like you’re in a fairytale.
5. Disney World, Florida, U.S.
New Year’s Eve at Walt Disney World seems to bring out the kid in everybody.
The parks pull out all the stops with dazzling fireworks, parades and themed celebrations.
The first New Year’s I spent here, I stood by Cinderella’s Castle watching the fireworks fill the night sky as if I were living a dream.
The celebrations are not just for families. Disney’s Epcot has an international party at its park, allowing you to greet the new year with style by sampling food and drinks from around the globe.
But if you’re looking to avoid the crush of crowds, Disney Springs has live music and festive vibes without the long lines.
6. The Aliveness of New Orleans, Louisiana
New Orleans knows how to party, and New Year’s Eve is no different.
The French Quarter fills with music, dance and laughter pouring out of every corner.
When I celebrated here, the biggest event was the fleur-de-lis drop in Jackson Square, after which a fireworks display over the Mississippi River followed.
The food is reason enough to make the trip.
Start the night with a bowl of gumbo or a plate of jambalaya, and don’t skip the beignet from Café Du Monde en route to the celebration.
Local jazz clubs provide an authentic experience that’s hard to find anywhere else.
7. Honolulu, Hawaii: The Coastal Bliss of Honolulu
If you miss the warm weather island vibes, Honolulu has a tropic New Year’s Eve.
Nothing like ending the year seeing fireworks over Waikiki Beach, listening to the waves in the back ground.
Hawaii’s relaxed and friendly culture invites you to relax and appreciate the present moment. Be it at a beachfront luau or after a midnight swim, the ambiance is simply blissful.
One year I went on a sunset cruise that became a dance party under the stars — one of my still favorite New Year’s memories.
Why You Should Go These Places
What sets these spots apart, though, is the distinctive way they mark the arrival of a new year.
