Italy Summer Packing List: Essentials for a Stylish Vacation

Summer in Italy is like magic: the golden sunsets, the gelato-fueled days, the photo-op piazzas.

When I first went there, I was overwhelmed packing for all the cobblestone streets, beach days and chic dining spots.

What I learned in this process, though, is that a well-thought-out packing list is the difference between a smooth trip and a wardrobe full of regrets.

We’ve put together this guide to help you pack all the essentials, so that you’ll be stylish, comfortable, and prepared for every adventure Italy throws your way.

1. Lightweight Dresses

Loose, airy dresses are ideal for the Mediterranean heat.

I packed airy, loose-fit midi dresses in soft fabrics that worked for daytime sightseeing and evening dinners.

Choose neutral or floral prints — they make for great photos against Italy’s colorful backdrops.

Style with a comfy pair of sandals for an effortlessly chic vibe.

2. Comfortable Walking Shoes

Cobblestone streets in Italy require comfortable, sturdy shoes.

I wore leather sneakers that were fun to look at and kept my feet happy during extensive walking tours.

Steer clear of heels unless you’re planning to wear them in a block or wedge style—it won’t fare well on bumpy or uneven ground.

A neutral will match with anything.

3. Chic Sunhat

A wide-brimmed sunhat protects you against the summer sun while also instantly stepping up your look.

I picked out a straw hat with a black ribbon that was looking to be a great accessory for vineyard visits and beach days.

It’s lightweight, packable and slightly Italian Riviera glam.

Add oversized sunglasses for that ultimate vacation effect.

4. Light Scarf

A lightweight scarf is a multi-tasking hero of the Italian summer wardrobe.

I wore mine to cover my shoulders when visiting churches, as a wrap on chillier evenings, and as a headscarf for an Audrey Hepburn moment.

Pick a material that breathes, such as cotton or linen.

It’s also practical, and adds a stylish layer to any outfit.

5. Swimwear

If your itinerary includes the Amalfi Coast or Capri, you’ll want some stylish swimwear.

I brought a combination of one-piece swimsuits and bikinis in solid colors to appear polished.

Slip on a sheer cover-up or sarong over them for effortless beach-to-lunch transitions.

Bring waterproof sandals or flip-flops, too.

6. Linen Pants and Tops

In Italy, linen is a summer staple — breathable, comfortable and effortlessly elegant.

Neutral linen pants can easily be paired with loose-fitting tops, which not only adds to comfort, but also gives a breezy and stylish feel.

They’re well suited for moving from casual mornings to evening aperitivos.

Pair it with a woven belt to add some fun.

7. Crossbody Bag

A small crossbody bag is perfect for carrying the essentials and leaving your hands free.

I chose a leather one in a neutral tan to go with everything I owned.

Find one with a secure zipper to keep your stuff safe in crowded spaces.

It’s not only practical, it’s stylish.

8. Evening Outfit

At least one dressy evening outfit for Italy’s nightlife.

I packed a silky slip dress that worked for fancier dinners and rooftop bars.

Pair with strappy heels and gold jewelry to elevate the look.

A neutral clutch adds to the look without taking up much real estate in your suitcase.

9. Reusable Water Bottle

Staying hydrated is critical in Italy’s hot summer days.

I carried a lightweight, packable water bottle that I topped off at public fountains.

This is an environmentally conscious item that also prevents you from purchasing single-use plastic bottles.

Bonus: It holds your water nice and icy cold all day long!

10. Sunglasses

You can’t leave for any summer trip to Italy without wearing a chic pair of glasses.

I chose oversized frames that gave full UV protection but felt effortless and stylish.

They can carry you from beach days to walks through sunny piazzas.

Buy a strong case that will keep them from scratching.

11. Travel-Sized Toiletries

Italy’s summer heat will have you wanting to spritz yourself with some travel-sized toiletries on the go.

I brought a facial spritz, a sunscreen, and some blotting papers to keep me cool and shine free.

Pick lightweight, TSA-approved products.

Keep them in your carry-on so you can grab them easily.”

12. Portable Charger

You’ll be taking hundreds of photos of Italy’s gorgeous sights, so a portable charger is crucial.

I took a small portable charger and a couple of phones that I could charge full twice.

It’s a godsend when you’re driving with maps or trying to capture magical moments.

And don’t forget the right plug adapter for Italy’s outlets.

13. Packable Tote Bag

A collapsible tote bag is ideal for shopping at markets or for hauling extras during day trips.

I used mine for beach gear, souvenirs and groceries for a picnic.

Pick one featuring a fun print for a dash of personality.

It also folds up small, making it easy to throw into your suitcase.

14. Light Jacket or Cardigan

Even during the summer months, returning to cooler evenings is not uncommon in Italy, particularly on the coast.

I brought a very thin denim jacket to layer with.

It also served as a chic accessory to my casual ensembles.

Just be sure it’s something that’s versatile and easy to throw on.

15. Camera

Italy is full of picture-perfect places, so be sure you’re ready to capture them.

I was using my smart phone but did take an extra memory card for my camera just in case.

Plus, don’t forget a sturdy case or strap to keep it safe while exploring.

I mean, you’re going to want to capture all of your stylish summer in Italy moments!
