15 Insider Tips for Royal Caribbean Cruise Travelers

The first time I entered a Royal Caribbean cruise ship, I was amazed at how big and grand it was.

I thought that cruises were only laying by the pool but there were so many other activities from shows, dining, adventures, and even zip-lining onboard!

That trip taught me many lessons on how to maximize my time on a cruise, and I’ve learned plenty more over the years.

This guide gives you everything you need to know, from how to book smart to how to cram in as much enjoyment as possible on board.

If you are preparing for your first Royal Caribbean cruise — or even your fifth — these tips will help ensure you have an unforgettable experience.

1. Book Early for the Best Deals

Royal Caribbean typically has early booking discounts, so it’s wise to book ahead.

Book early, and you’re more likely to get the best cabins and itineraries.

Last time I waited too long and got a subpar room — never again!

Look out for sales or promotions to save even more.

2. Know Your Style, and Choose The Right Ship

Every Royal ship has a different vibe ranging from family-friendly to adventure-seeker.

Read up to find out about amenities and activities to choose the spot that suits your vacation style.

On my previous trip, I picked Symphony of the Seas for its water slides and live performances, and had a blast.

Be sure to read reviews and check out ship layouts before committing.

3. Opt for the Drink Packages

A drink package can save you money if you plan to enjoy cocktails, specialty coffees, or fresh fruit juices.

Royal Caribbean has different footing guides, so select one lining up with your preferences.

I went all-inclusive on a Caribbean cruise, and I will say it paid off — endless piña coladas, why don’t you?

Just remember to buy the package before boarding to get the best price.

4. Pack a Carry-On Bag

Your luggage may take several hours to reach your cabin after you board the ship.

Packing a carry-on bag with necessities such as swimwear, sunscreen and a change of clothes will make it easier to get settled immediately.

I’ve discovered to pack mine with items I’ll want on the first day after arriving, such as a good book for lounging by the pool.

It is a minor detail that makes a major difference.

5. Book Shows and Activities in Advance

Popular shows and specialty dining spots fill quickly; book them when reservations open.

Using the Royal Caribbean app makes it simple to create your schedule in advance.

Once, I scored front-row seats to an ice-skating show, and it made the experience all the more memorable.

Don’t wait until you’re on board to start making these plans.

6. Download the Royal Caribbean app

The app is a godsend: You can track your itinerary, make reservations and chat with other travelers.

If you’re on one of the larger ships, it can also come in handy for navigating your way around.

I used it every day on my last cruise and it saved me so much time and energy.

And you’ll receive real-time notifications about events and activities.

7. Learn About the Cruise Compass

This daily planner — called The Cruise Compass — gets delivered to your stateroom and lists all of the day’s happenings.

Your guide to maximizing every minute on board.

I always have mine at the ready as well, highlighting events I want to catch, such as trivia nights and themed parties.

Do this and pair it to the app.

8. Arrive at the Port Early

Arriving at the port early allows you to later embark your nice and smooth check-in process and gives you time to understand the ship.

I prefer to board mid-morning to avoid the crowds and have a leisurely lunch on board before many have even stepped on board the ship.

It also allows you to see prime spots, such as the pool or the sundeck, before they become crowded.

You’ll be glad you got the jump on the rush.

9. Pack a Power Strip or USB Hub

Cabins tend to have outlets in short supply, so a mini power strip or USB hub can deliver big dividends.

This is particularly helpful if you are charging multiple devices such as phones, cameras, and tablets.

I forgot mine once and switching out the outlets was a chore — lesson learned!

Make sure it’s specifically cruise-approved, without surge protection.

10. Try the Specialty Restaurants

Although the main dining room and buffet are wonderful, the specialty restaurants take dining to a different level with unique and higher quality experiences.

There’s something to satisfy every palate, from steak to sushi.

On my last cruise, I treated myself to dinner at Chops Grille; it was one of the best meals I’ve had at sea.

Make reservations for a table, especially at dinner, though I’ve found the lunch hours rather hard to book, too.

11. Explore Ports with Excursions

Royal Caribbean has its own turnkey excursions, but you can opt to plan your own adventures.

Look into where you are going for things to do that interest you.

I once booked a snorkeling tour on my own and it was the highlight of my trip.

Just be sure to be back on board on time — it’s not worth the risk of missing it.

12. Make the Most of the Adults-Only Solarium

The Solarium is a peaceful, adults-only sanctuary, with cushy loungers, swimming pools and a calming vibe.

It’s my favorite place to take a break from all of the excitement in the rest of the ship.

I enjoy picking up a drink and chilling there on a sunny afternoon — it’s like a private paradise.

Most likely your ship has it, so make use of it and take some time to relax.

13. Don’t Miss the Themed Parties

Royal Caribbean is famed for its raucous themed parties, such as white nights and ’80s dance-offs.

Make sure to pack accordingly so you’re not left out of the fun.

On one cruise I dressed up for a Caribbean-themed evening, and it was a lovely way to get to know your fellow travelers.

These are infectious energies, so don’t sit these out!

14. Bring Small Bills for Tipping

Gratuities are usually included in your cruise package, but having small bills handy for additional tips is always welcome.

This is particularly great for room service, bartenders or port excursions.

I’ve discovered that an added dose of kindness expands the experience in remarkable ways.

Crew members work long days, and it’s nice to feel appreciated, as well.”

15. Stay Flexible and Have Fun

Even with perfect planning, nothing goes right always.

Some of my best cruise memories resulted from spur-of-the-moment decisions, such as spontaneously joining an impromptu karaoke session.

Just relax, play it by ear, and enjoy what the ship and ports have to offer.

At the end of the day, it is all about making those memorable moments.
