Fall Photography Spots in Lake Tahoe

Best Fall Photography Spots in Lake Tahoe

Lake Tahoe in the fall is pure magic.

As the aspens turn golden and the waters of the lake reflect the brilliance, this area becomes a photographer’s delight.

I’ve hiked Lake Tahoe’s trails, beaches, and vistas in the fall, and everyone of them is a postcard waiting to happen.

If you’re going to Tahoe with a camera in hand (or just your phone), here is where you won’t want to miss.

1. Kings Beach

Kings Beach offers vibrant sunsets, especially in the fall.

Itself the beach is a fine location for capturing the lake’s peaceful beauty, but be sure to take in the surrounding area, where splashes of fall foliage offset the water’s stillness beautifully.

Come early for sunrise or stick around after dark for sunset to see the lake in warm, golden light.

2. Fallen Leaf Lake

The tranquility of Fallen Leaf Lake, just south of Lake Tahoe, along with beautiful fall colors.

The tranquil waters mirror the mountains and colorful foliage around them, making it a dreamy place for photography. Sunset here is especially flat-out magical, as the sky turns orange and pink to match the fall palette.

It’s also a quieter spot, ideal for photographing quiet landscapes without the throngs.

3. Hope Valley

Hope Valley is the endgame if you’re chasing peak fall colors.

About a half-hour south of Lake Tahoe, this valley is known for its golden aspens against a backdrop of rugged mountains.

Photographers converge here for wide-angle views of the endless groves and close-ups of the glowing leaves.

Don’t forget the views along Highway 88 — every twist and turn is a picture-perfect moment.

4. Emerald Bay State Park

Emerald Bay is gorgeous year-round but at its autumn peak, it’s next-level beautiful.

The combination of evergreens and deciduous trees freckles the dramatic landscape with color.

For panoramic shots of the bay along with Fannette Island and the surrounding mountains, make your way to the Inspiration Point overlook.

If you dare, hike down to Vikingsholm Castle for an unusual view of the bay set against ripe trees.

5. Zephyr Cove

Zephyr Cove’s sandy beaches and turquoise waters are pretty iconic, but in the fall, they take on a cozy, golden glow.

The contrast of warm fall colors with the cool blues of the lake create some stunning compositions.

One thing that’s especially photogenic here are early mornings, when mist curls off the water and magical light graces the shoreline.

Indoors, an abstract chandelier and a wide, floor-to-ceiling view of the lake offer a full picture of this lakeside retreat.

6. Spooner Lake

Spooner Lake: Tucked away in Lake Tahoe Nevada State Park, this is one of the hidden treasures for fall photography.

The loop trail that surrounds the expansive body of water is a photogenic wonderland at every step, from golden aspens brushing the water’s edge to mountain reflections dancing on the surface.

It’s also a quiet location, so it’s easy to set up your tripod and play around with various angles.

7. Marlette Lake

Marlette Lake is a bit of hike from the road, but the fall colors make it a worthy trek.

This mountain lake is surrounded by thick aspen groves that become radiant yellow in autumn.

The uphill trail is picturesque, with paths snaking through vibrant forests sprinkled with the occasional peek of a lake.

Go at the golden hour for a soft, glowing light that makes the colors pop even more.

8. Mount Tallac Trail

For a more adventurous photography outing, the Mount Tallac Trail provides jaw-dropping views of Lake Tahoe and its fall foliage.

The full hike isn’t easy, but even the lower trails offer amazing photo spots.

Shoot golden aspens among soaring pines, with the lake glimmering in background.

Travel light but don’t forget your zoom lens for those sweeping panoramic shots.

9. Taylor Creek

Renowned for its fall colors and wildlife, Taylor Creek is a go-to destination for fall photographers.

In October the aspen trees lining the creek explode in golden glory, mirrored by the surface of the water.

It’s also the site of the Kokanee salmon run, which brings bald eagles and other wildlife, making it ideal for nature shots.

Pro tip: For easy access to some of the best views around, hit up the Rainbow Trail.

10. Tahoe Meadows

Just off of Mount Rose Highway, Tahoe Meadows transforms into a photographer’s playground in autumn.

This site at altitude offers broad views of the surrounding peaks, where patches of fall color are sprinkled.

The meadows themselves are postcard material, with golden grasses rippling in the wind and sporadic wildlife sitings making things even more picturesque.

Pack your hiking boots — you’ll want to hit the trails for the best angles.
