With every turn feeling like a postcard, from dramatic coastlines to pretty medieval towns.
I went on my first trans-European road trip and it was life changing, genuinely.
That freedom to pull over wherever whenever is part of the magic of road-tripping.

1. Amalfi Coast, Italy
The Amalfi Coast is a road-trippers dream.
This stunning stretch of coastline features dramatic cliffs, pastel villages and views that will take your breath away.
You can start in Naples, twist through Positano and end in Ravello — for the experience of a lifetime.
Visiting those country road areas can be somewhat difficult on the drive due to narrow roads, however the scenery makes it all worth the visit. I still recall pausing for fresh limoncello and thinking I was in a movie.
2. Ring of Kerry, Ireland
For rugged landscapes that meet dense greenery, nothing compares to Ireland’s Ring of Kerry.
This circular route cuts through postcard-beautiful villages, ancient ruins, and glimmering lakes.
Don’t miss the Gap of Dunloe and Torc Waterfall for some amazing photo ops.
Driving here is like time travel. I loved watching the sheep graze in the grass by the road — it’s just part of the charm.
3. Romantic Road, Germany
Germany’s Romantic Road is a fairy tale.
This route links charming towns such as Rothenburg ob der Tauber and Füssen, castles and cobblestone streets at every turn.
A highlight is the inspiration for Disney’s Sleeping Beauty Castle: Neuschwanstein Castle.
I enjoyed stopping at little bakeries along the way for fresh pretzels and apple strudel — it is a feast for the eyes and your gut.
4. French Riviera, France
To experience the glamour of the French Riviera, nothing scores higher than the car.
Cruise the shimmering Mediterranean coast, from Nice to Cannes to Antibes and Monaco.
The Corniche roads are lined with breathtaking views at every corner.
I will never forget driving with the windows down, the sea wind blowing through my hair and Edith Piaf on the radio — it was magic.
5. North Coast 500, Scotland
Scotland’s equivalent to Route 66, the North Coast 500, is an epic road trip.
This 516-mile (830-kilometer) loop passes through stunning highlands, wild coastlines and ancient ruins.
Make sure to catch the beaches at Achmelvich and the breathtaking views at Bealach na Bà.
To drive here is an adventure into the wild. I spent hours being taken by the beauty of hidden coves and birds — it’s a nature lover’s paradise.
6. Dalmatian Coast, Croatia
The only unforgettable, sun-kissed road trip on Croatia’s Dalmatian Coast
Begin in Dubrovnik and then travel the Adriatic Highway, passing through Split, Zadar and all forward to Rijeka.
With its turquoise waters and meld of historic towns, this route is a feast for the senses.
I adored stopping to swim in quiet, secluded coves and feasting on fish at beachside restaurants — a Mediterranean dream come true.
7. Alpine Road, Austria
Austria’s high Alpine Road is a marvel of engineering and natural beauty.
This stunning road trip traverses the Alps with visits to picturesque lakes, quaint towns and the famous Grossglockner High Alpine Road.
The views of the snow-capped peaks are phenomenal.
I vividly recall driving the lush valleys with cowbell clangs in the distance — a scene straight out of The Sound of Music.
8. Spain & France — Basque Country
The Basque Country is a coastal/cultural fusion.
Begin in Bilbao, Spain, and track the coastline through San Sebastián and into Biarritz, France.
The food, from pintxos to fresh catches, is an adventure.
I loved that this trip paired gorgeous beaches with lively cities — that’s ideal for people who like variety.
9. Trollstigen and Geirangerfjord, Norway
The scenic Trollstigen route in Norway cuts through stunning fjord scenery.
With hairpin turns and sweeping panoramic viewpoints, the winding road takes you down to Geirangerfjord, perhaps the most breathtaking of all.
Be sure to stop at Seven Sisters Waterfall on the way.
Driving here was like being on another planet and the size of the fjords was mind-blowing!
10. Portugal’s Algarve Coast
If you want golden beaches and charming fishing villages, the Algarve Coast cannot be beaten.
Begin in Faro and travel onward to Lagos, Albuferia and Sagres. The cliffs and turquoise waters present a beautiful vista.
One of my favorite memories was watching the sunset while we were at Ponta da Piedade, where waves would crash against the cliffs—and that was amazing.
