Day Trip to Portofino

Day Trip to Portofino: A Complete Itinerary

Portofino is a gem that steals your heart from the moment you set foot there.

But, really, even if you’ve got only a day to spare, this charming, seaside village has some sort of magic that slows time down.

I remember my first trip to Portofino vividly.

I was staying in nearby Santa Margherita Ligure, and I hopped a ferry to this magical spot.

The moment I glimpsed its world-famous harbor, ringing with riotously colored buildings and gleaming boats, I knew I would never be the same.

For a day trip, it can feel overwhelming to try to fit so much beauty into just a few hours.

That’s why I’ve created this guide.

From where to eat and what to see to the little touches that make Portofino so special, this itinerary will help you hit the highlights without feeling rushed.

We will now tell you how to make your Portofino day trip memorable.

Morning: Arrival and a stroll around the harbor

Start Your Day Early

If you’re arriving by ferry, bus or car, try to reach Portofino by mid-morning.

Last but not least, the visit to the village is free of charge, thus the earlier you arrive, the more “empty” it would be, providing a few moments for yourself before all the crowds arrive.

The ferry from Santa Margherita Ligure or Rapallo is especially beautiful, passing by lovely coastal scenery.

Stroll Through the Harbor

The first thing you’ll want to do is meander around the harbor.

Gaze at the pastel-tinged buildings that line the coast and the fishing boats that bob in the water.

Adjust the cameraThis is the ideal time to take snapshots while the light remains soft and golden

Now and then, stop into a few local shops.

Tip: Be sure to stop in Il Vicoletto, a small shop filled with wonderful handmade items and souvenirs.

Late Morning: Explore Castello Brown

Head up to Castello Brown, a fortress dating from 200 years ago that looms over Portofino from the hilltop above it.

The hike is approximately 15 minutes long and quite easy, though you’ll be wanting comfortable shoes.

When you get to the top, you’ll be rewarded with sweeping views of the harbor, the Mediterranean and the verdant hillsides that cradle the village.

It’s a lovely castle, with beautiful gardens and some interesting historical displays.

It’s the kind of place you want to stay awhile.

Lunch: Ligurian Culinary Experience

Dining by the Water

For lunch, walk back down to the harbor and snag a table at Ristorante Puny or Ristorante Delfino.

Both have incredible views and menus featuring Ligurian specialties.

For a pasta that’s made with Portofino’s world-renowned pesto sauce, try the trofie al pesto; unobtrusive fresh seafood, such as grilled octopus, is also available.

Accompanied by a glass of local Vermentino wine, you’ll allow every bite to melt in your mouth.

Early Afternoon: Hike to the Lighthouse

Enjoy the Coastal Views

Post lunch, take a leisurely stroll to Faro di Portofino, the iconic lighthouse that sits at the tip of the peninsula.

The trail is well marked and shaded by Mediterranean pines, and a pleasant walk even on a warm day.

At the lighthouse there’s a little café where you can grab a drink and take in the amazing sea views.

It is a serene location that seems a world apart from the demands of everyday life.

Late Afternoon: Rest and Recharge

Time for Gelato

A trip to Portofino wouldn’t be complete without ice cream.

Pop into Gelateria Bar San Giorgio for a scoop (or two) of rich Italian gelato.

My favorite flavors here are pistachio and lemon — they’re refreshing and perfect for a sunny afternoon.

Grab your gelato to-go and head for a bench by the harbor to relax and people watch.

Optional Boat Ride

If you have a little extra time, take a short boat trip to nearby coves or beaches.

San Fruttuoso is a favorite, with its hidden abbey and crystalline waters.

A short cruise around the harbor can reveal a fresh angle on Portofino’s splendor.

Evening: A Fond Farewell

Enjoy a Sunset Aperitivo

On your way back, stop for an aperitivo at Winterose Wine Bar.

Perched directly on the harbor, come here for a spritz (or a glass of Prosecco) alongside the sunset.

The way golden light dances across the water and pastel buildings is pure magic.

Departure

As your day in Portofino winds down, take one last look at the harbor and savor its charm.

Whether you’re heading back across the water on a ferry, catching a bus home or driving back to base, you’ll leave with a heart full.

Final Thoughts

Portofino is small, but filled with memorable experiences.

This itinerary hits the highlights while allowing you enough time to enjoy the village’s glacial pace.

Whether it’s your first time here or not, Portofino has a way of making each visit feel like a dream.

So take your time, savor the experience and allow the enchantment of this coastal town to whisk you off your feet.
