10 Instagram-Worthy Beach Photo Poses to Try This Summer
Something about the beach unleashes the photographer in everyone.
Out at the beach, the natural light, the glimmering water, and the balmy sands provide the ideal background for composing those envy-inducing pictures for social media.
For me personally, some of my favorite travel memories are associated with taking that one ideal beach photo which reminds me forever of the heavenly moment.
But taking those shots is not just a matter of the backdrop — it is also about the pose.
When you want to come across as casually chic or all-out adventurous, your beach photo pose can make or break the moment.
Here are 10 poses both fun and flattering to try on your next trip to the coast!
1. The Walk Along the Shore
It is a classic, easy-to-land pose that encompasses the beauty of movement.
Stroll barefoot on the shoreline, allowing your toes to sink into the sand as the waves slowly wash ashore. Relax your shoulders, and let your dress or cover-up flow freely in the wind.
Another trick I often turn to is to walk while looking back over my shoulder — it gives a candid, carefree feel to the photo.
2. The Over-the-Shoulder Glance
Ideal for displaying your outfit or hat, this pose exudes casual glamour.
Stand facing away from the camera, then turn your head just enough to look over your shoulder. Place your arms naturally — perhaps clutching your hat or behind your ear.
I once used this pose to highlight a woven sun hat with “Bon Voyage” stitched on the brim—it was a huge hit!
3. Sitting on the Sand
And nothing feels quite like beach vibes than lounging on the warm sand.
Cross your legs or extend your legs, leaning back slightly on your hands. Gaze at the horizon or shut your eyes as if bathing in the sun.
On my previous journey, I did so surrounded by seashells, which gave the picture such a calm aesthetic.
4. The Beach Towel Flat Lay
Utilize your towel as a prop by lying on your stomach for a silly shot.
Resting on your elbows, propped up with a book, drink, or even sunglasses for interest. Get the camera to pick up the towel’s playful design and the sand below.
I did this with a tropical-patterned towel in Costa Rica, and it made me feel like I was part of a summer ad!
5. The “Wading in Water” Pose
Walk into the shallow waves for a dreamy, romantic look.
Stand facing the ocean, allowing the water to lap at your feet, or turn slightly to the side with one hand tracing the surface of the water. Team it with a flowy dress or beach cover-up for extra movement.
I shot this pose during sunset in Bali and it really added that golden-hour feel to the photo.
6. Grabbing the hat in the wind pose
When the seawind blows: Let it work for you and start moving in your pose.
Stand, one hand clutching the brim of your hat, the other reclining on your hip. Allow your hair and outfit to dance in the wind.
I did this with a straw sun hat as well, and the wind gave a fun element to the picture.
7. Lying in the Sand
For a casual, sultry feel, lie in the sand on your back with your arms sprawled over your head.
Point your legs a little bit (it’s the flattest), allow your hair to ripple like a waterfall. The secret is to appear natural and relaxed — almost as if you dozed off in the sun.
When I tried this pose on a quiet afternoon at a hidden beach in Greece, it became one of my most-liked photos, too.
8. The Playful Splash
Go candid by splashing water in the air and stealing an impromptu picture.
Stand knee-deep in the ocean, scoop up some water, and throw it joyfully upward. Smile or even laugh à la naturale — it’s all about the joy in this pose.
I’ve used this on so many trips, and it always elicits the fun, carefree vibe of a day at the beach.
9. The Long Shadow Shot
Take advantage of the golden hour and make some beautiful shadow art.
Stand up straight with the sun behind you, and let your shadow cast a long stretch across the sand. Use props such as hats or surfboards to form unique shapes in your silhouette.
This pose, which I played around with on a beach in California, became a creative favorite for me — it’s easy but so artsy.
10. The “Relaxing with a Drink” Pose
Nothing says vacation mode quite like chilling out with a refreshing drink in your hand.
Sit in a beach chair or against a rock, a colorful cocktail, coconut or fruit juice in hand. Finish with sunglasses or a floppy hat.
I once did this with a pineapple drink on a beach in Puerto Rico and it immediately became the most-saved photo in my feed.
