These iconic spots and hidden gems are perfect for pictures and memories alike.
Let’s explore the charm and magic of the most picture-perfect locations in Italy.
1. Positano, Amalfi Coast
A jumble of colorful houses tumbling down steep cliffs toward the sea, Positano is the Amalfi Coast at its most picturesque.
The narrow streets, filled with boutique shops and cafes, turn every corner into a postcard.
I enjoyed wandering in the early morning, before the crowds, the light was just magical.
Be sure to catch sight of it from the beach, where the village rises sharply behind you.
2. Rialto Bridge, Venice
Venice has so many wonderful places, but the Rialto Bridge is one of the best.
You can cross it in the early morning for a quieter experience, or enjoy the bustle of people throughout the day.
From the bridge, you can see gondolas gliding on the Grand Canal.
It’s a scene you’d only find in a painting, and with the light of the golden hour, it’s all the more magical.
3. Val d’Orcia, Tuscany
Val d’Orcia’s rolling hills are the quintessential Italian countryside.
Fields of gold sprinkled with cypress trees stretch to the horizon.
I drove here, making side stops in quaint villages like Pienza and Montepulciano.
The scenery is so breathtaking you’ll feel as if you’ve walked into a Renaissance painting.
4. Blue Grotto, Capri
The Blue Grotto is a stunning natural wonder.
As you immerse your boat into the sea cave, the water turns an electric blue, sunlight dancing off liquid like dimples during swimming, its bodies flowing pink and pale green as it splashes along.
It was like entering an alternate universe, completely surreal and potent.
Plan to go in the early morning or late afternoon to avoid peak hours.
5. Cinque Terre, Liguria
Cinque Terre, the five fishing villages along the rugged coastline, are a rainbow necklace of color.
My personal favorite was Manarola, with its pastel houses hugging the cliffs above the sea.
Hike from village to village for jaw-dropping views, or take a boat ride for a different vantage point.
It’s a treat for the eyes and the soul, beauty around each corner.
6. The Colosseum, Rome
Rome’s iconic Colosseum is a bucket-list spot for history lovers and photographers of all stripes.
It’s a humbling experience viewing this ancient edifice up close, especially in the evening light glow.
Try and book a tour to see the underground levels for a much deeper understanding of its history.
Highlight the glory of this ancient monument from all angles.
7. Lake Como, Lombardy
Lake Como is the epitome of style, flanked by verdant mountains and palatial houses.
I based myself in Bellagio, where cobblestone streets rise up from the water to sweeping views of the lake.
Or hop a ferry to visit other towns, like Varenna and Menaggio, each with its own allure.
It simply cannot be forgotten for the beautiful scenery and turbulent waters.
8. Ponte Vecchio, Florence
This landmark bridge, lined with jewelry shops, is among the most romantic places in Florence.
I walked across it at sunset, when the Arno River mirrored the sky’s warm colors.
For a great perspective, go to the adjacent Uffizi Gallery or Michelangelo’s Piazzale.
The bridge itself is a historical and beautiful work of art.
9. Alberobello’s Trulli, Puglia
Alberobello’s fairy-tale houses are trulli whitewashed.
These cone-roofed abodes, a distinctive of the area, form a whimsical, almost surreal atmosphere.
I ambled through the Rione Monti district, in which common trulli dot the narrow streets like a village stuck in time.
It’s a quirky, fun and delightful place for photos and exploring.
10. Piazza San Marco, Venice
The most famous square in Venice is a must-see, both for its splendor and its spirit.
The elaborate features of St. Mark’s Basilica and the soaring Campanile tower make it a picture-perfect setting.
I stopped for coffee at Caffè Florian and soaked in the buzz of live music and gliding gondolas.
Go early or late to skip the crowds and enjoy the magic.
11. Mount Etna, Sicily
Europe’s most active volcano is a stark counterpoint to Sicily’s serene beaches.
I joined a guided tour to hike its moon-like landscapes and see its smoking craters up close.
The summit views are otherworldly, reaching all the way to the Ionian Sea.
It’s a thrilling and awe-inspiring experience you won’t soon forget.
12. Ponte di Rialto, Florence
Florence’s Ponte di Rialto is a lesser-known but just as pretty place.
This medieval stone bridge provides sweeping views of the city’s rooftops and the Arno River.
I loved it too at night, when the city lights shimmer in the water.
It’s a quiet and romantic alternative to busier landmarks.
13. The Spanish Steps, Rome
These iconic steps serve as a meeting point for locals and tourists alike.
Climbing them offers sweeping views of the Piazza di Spagna far below.
I sat with a gelato, soaking in the ambiance and watching people walk by.
The steps spring to life during the sunset, drenched in golden light.
14. Verona’s Juliet’s Balcony
If you’re a romantic at heart, Verona’s Juliet’s Balcony is a must-see.
This delightful venue pays homage to Shakespeare’s timeless love story, Romeo and Juliet.
And I stood beneath the balcony, mixing them both in the air above my head, giving the weight of history to the accounts of fiction.
It’s a poetically beautiful corner of Italy.
15. Villa Rufolo, Ravello
Set above the stunning Amalfi Coast, Villa Rufolo has garden views that will take your breath away.
I roamed its terraces, embraced by blooms, ancient architecture and an inviting atmosphere.
The sea and coast stretched before me, unblemished and pristine.
It’s a spot where nature mingles with history to form a flawless union.
