Whether you’re a fan of exploring ancient cities, hiking through verdant rainforests, or reclining on perfect beaches, we hope this guide will help you make your trip the most enjoyable it can be.
In this travel itinerary, I’ll share the must-visit spots, hidden gems, and advice to experience Puerto Rico like a pro.
By the end you’ll feel like you’ve really been enchanted by the Island of Enchantment.
Day 1: Explore History in Old San Juan
Start your journey in Puerto Rico in Old San Juan, a picturesque area packed with history and colorful buildings.
Begin your day wandering the cobblestone streets flanked by pastel-hued colonial buildings.
Head to Castillo San Felipe del Morro, a fortress with panoramic views of the Atlantic.
Its a picture perfect place to have a few snaps and learnt about the intriguing past of the island.
A plate of mofongo (smash plantains), a traditional Puerto Rican dish, will do you well at lunchtime, and you can find it at Raíces.
If you are being a bit dubious, trust me this dish is a game-changer and personally my favorite.
In the afternoon, stroll along the Paseo de la Princesa, a tree-lined promenade filled with local artisans selling crafts and souvenirs.
Wrap up the day at La Factoria, a globally recognized bar famous for its innovative cocktails and vibrant vibe.
Day 2: Explore El Yunque National Forest
On your second day, go to El Yunque National Forest, the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest System.
Hike the La Mina Trail, which culminates at a breathtaking waterfall with a swimming hole, early.
I still recall how calm I felt standing under the rushing water — it’s pure magic.
Gather snacks and water, or swing past a roadside kiosk for empanadas before you head deep into the forest.
There are unparalleled views from Yokahu Tower that will give you a panoramic overview of the lush greenery enveloping you.
End your adventure with a singular moment of reflection at Baño Grande, a chlorinated man-made pool located inside the rainforest.
Day 3: Escape to Vieques
Vieques is one of Puerto Rico’s best-kept secrets, and one of the must-visit spots when it comes to unspoiled beauty.
Hop on a ferry or take a short flight here to this island paradise.
Pass your day at Playa Caracas or Playa Negra, where silk sticks under your feet.
The beaches here are quiet and pristine, providing a perfect refuge from the bustle of life in the mainland.
In the evening, head to Mosquito Bay, the brightest bioluminescent bay on the planet (it’s best to visit in the early evening).
Paddle through waters glowing with bioluminescence and it feels surreal — it’s nature’s light show, performed exclusively for you.
Spend the night on Vieques to soak up the island’s relaxed vibe, or return to the mainland.
Day 4: Snorkeling and Sunset in Culebra
Culebra, another gorgeous island offshore, is a paradise for beach-goers and snorkelers.
Begin your day at Flamenco Beach, known for its turquoise waves and fine white-sand shore.
I still have an indelible picture in my head of reclining here — it’s paradise by every definition of the word.
To have unforgettable snorkeling, Tamarindo Beach, where you swim with sea turtles and beautiful marine life.
After a day of relaxation, have dinner at a local seafood shack. Fresh-caught fish here is hard to beat, and the low-key vibe will make you feel like a local.
Day 5: Rich History and Relaxation in Ponce
On your last day, head to southern Puerto Rico and visit Ponce, the island’s second-largest city.
Be sure to stop in at the Parque de Bombas, a colorful former firehouse that has been repurposed into a museum so captivating it feels like a palace.
Explore art and culture at the Museo de Arte de Ponce, which has a remarkable collection of European and Puerto Rican pieces.
Spend the night in Guanica, home of the Guanica Dry Forest, a U.N. biosphere reserve.
The otherworldly landscape is a stark contrast to the greens of El Yunque, and serves as a peaceful end to your journey.
