3-Day Portofino Itinerary

The Perfect 3-Day Portofino Itinerary

Portofino is one of those postcard places, one that seems torn right out of the page.

On my first visit, I was entranced by the painted houses that painted the harbor, the fragrance of the sea and freshly baked focaccia melding together; the soft hum of waves thumping boats.

I spent hours wandering its narrow streets, taking in the views, enjoying food.

This delightful Italian town taught me to slow down, breathe deep and remember the little things.

That’s the reason why I want to create this guide, so you can experience the magic of Portofino like I did.

A trip here can seem a bit overwhelming to plan.

Where do you stay?

How do you maximize a short visit?

In this post, I’m going to bring you a complete Portofino itinerary for 3 days, what to eat, what to see and little tips only a traveler who has been there would share.

By the time you’re done, you’ll be equipped to tackle this stellar destination confidently.

Day 1: Welcome to Portofino

Morning: Arrival and Check-In

Arrive to a welcoming boutique hotel such as Belmond Hotel Splendido or Hotel Piccolo Portofino.

Both offer excellent views and easy access to the heart of the village.

Once you’re settled in, soak up the tranquil surroundings from your balcony or terrace.

You’ll want to let that initial moment sink in — it’s impossible to forget.

Afternoon: Walk Around the Harbor

Go directly to the harbor, the pulse of Portofino.

Stroll the cobblestone roads, and take in the pastel-colored buildings, while browsing local shops.

A stop at L’Antica Drogheria Seghezzo, a gourmet shop selling unusual Italian specialties to bring home, is also worth it.

Make your way for lunch to Ristorante Puny, famous for trofie al pesto, a Ligurian classic.

As you eat, take in views of the turquoise water and fishing boats swaying in the harbor.

Sunset at Castello Brown, Evening

Hike up to Castello Brown, an ancient fortress with panoramic views of the coastline.

The walk takes around 15 minutes but the reward at the top makes every step worth it.

When the sun is setting, the magical, golden sunshine illuminating the village is insane.

At dinner, eat at Trattoria Tripoli, a small family-run place famous for its fresh seafood dishes.

The anchovy past is here was a game changer for me!

Day 2: Explore the Beauty Near Portofino

Morning: Hike to the San Fruttuoso Abbey

Wear your most comfortable socks and hike to reach San Fruttuoso Abbey.

This hike takes you through lush Mediterranean plant life with stunning sea views.

The hike takes approximately two hours, but is doable for most fitness levels.

If you’d rather avoid the hike, you can reach it via boat from the harbor.

The abbey itself lies in a small cove, and its remote setting feels like a trip back in time.

After touring the abbey, unwind with a dip in the nearby crystal-clear water.

Mid-afternoon — Rest and Lunch by the Sea

Lunch at Giorgio’s, an idyllic (upscale) beachfront taverna serving fresh fish and regional wines.

Afterward, relax for a while on the beach or dip your toes in the water.

It’s an awesome way to wind down and reconnect with nature.

Evening: Stroll around Santa Margherita Ligure

A 10-minute ferry or taxi ride to Santa Margherita Ligure, the neighboring town, is positively charmed.

Stroll through its energetic piazzas, stop by the Basilica di Santa Margherita, built in Baroque style, and treat yourself to gelato at one of the countless stores.

For dinner, Ristorante da Michele has a menu of Ligurian flavors served with a modern twist.

Day 3: Indulge In Portofino’s Best

Morning: Watch the sunrise at the lighthouse

Get up early and head to Faro di Portofino, the village’s signature lighthouse.

The walk is serene at this hour, and the view of the sunrise over the Ligurian Sea will be a memory you’ll cherish for a lifetime.

For breakfast, stop at the cozy cafeteria Bar Mariuccia, close to the harbor, and try their cappuccino and the freshly baked croissants.

Afternoon: Luxury and Leisure

Your last day: Treat yourself to the high life in Portofino.

Explore designer shops in the village, including Missoni and Louis Vuitton, or sift through artisanal shops for unique pieces.

For lunch, head to La Terrazza, at the Belmond Hotel Splendido.

Their seafood risotto is divine, and the views from their terrace will keep you lingering over every mouthful.

Dinner with a View

At the end of your trip, celebrate with a relaxed dinner at Ristorante Delfino, directly on the water.

There’s a local Vermentino wine by the bottle, and a multi-course meal including a classic tiramisu for dessert.

In your last hours, stroll around the harbor, absorbing the sights and sounds of Portofino at nighttime.

Final Thoughts

Portofino: More than a pretty destination, Portofino is an experience.

This 3-day itinerary hits the highlights but leaves you free to soak in its slow-paced, luxe vibe.

Take your time, enjoy every moment, and allow Portofino’s magic to seep into your heart.

It certainly did with mine.
