3-Day Itinerary for Exploring Sicily

The Ultimate 3-Day Itinerary for Exploring Sicily

When I visited Sicily for the first time, I felt as if I’d walked into a living postcard.

The island is a beautiful blend of history, culture, and natural beauty and every little nook has a story to tell.

I explored ancient ruins, enjoyed delicious Sicilian food, and savored Riviera vistas.

Planning a trip to Sicily can seem daunting since there’s so much to see, but a logical itinerary can help you maximize your time.

This 3-day itinerary will suit first-time visitors or those who want to see the best Sicily has to offer in a short time.

From visiting historic villages to eating real cannoli, you’re in for a time to remember.

Day 1: Palermo, History, Food and Culture

You’ll start in the capital city of Sicily, Palermo, which is noted for its fascinating history and incredible street food.

Start at the Palermo Cathedral, an architectural wonder featuring a mix of Norman, Arabic, and Baroque styles.

I recall going to the rooftop for panoramic views — not to be missed, particularly in morning light.

Then, go to the Ballarò Market to get a taste of life in the local area.

The colorful stalls are piled high with fresh produce, spices and street food such as arancini and panelle.

For lunch, pick up a pane con la milza (spleen sandwich) — I was skeptical initially, but it’s a classic Sicilian street food item and shockingly tasty.

In the afternoon, tour the Capuchin Catacombs, a morbid but fascinating glimpse of Sicilian history.

End your day with pasta alla Norma or seafood risotto at a neighborhood trattoria — I loved the homely feel of Trattoria Ferro di Cavallo.

Day 2: Agrigento and Valley of the Temples

On day two, drive or take a bus to Agrigento, which is home to one of Sicily’s biggest attractions, the Valley of the Temples.

This UNESCO World Heritage Site is an extraordinary ensemble of ancient Greek temples immersed in a spellbinding setting.

I’d recommend arriving early to avoid the heat and crowds.

Strolling through the Temple of Concordia, one of the world’s best-preserved Greek temples, it felt as if we were walking in the past.

After checking out the site, go to the Scala dei Turchi, a dramatic white limestone cliff that flows into the turquoise sea.

It’s the ideal place to unwind and refresh after your historical expeditions.

For dinner, enjoy local Agrigento specialties such as caponata and cassata siciliana at an unassuming restaurant nearby.

Day 3: Taormina and Mount Etna

Day 13: Enjoy your last day at Taormina, an adorable hilltop town located at the the foot of Mount Tauro and overlooking the Ionian Sea.

Begin your morning at the Teatro Antico di Taormina, an ancient Greek theater that features a stunning backdrop of Mount Etna.

I’ll never forget what it felt like to sit there, envisioning the performances that occurred centuries before.

Walk on Corso Umberto, the main pedestrian street filled with boutique shops, cafes, and gelaterias.

Indulge in a gelato or a granita, the latter my favorite being almond-flavored granita with a brioche bun.

In the afternoon, head out to Mount Etna, Europe’s most active volcano.

You can visit its lunar-like landscapes on a guided tour or a cable car.

The scenery from the peak is incredible, and it’s worth the effort to see this natural wonder.

Wrap up your day with a farewell dinner that includes Sicilian wine and traditional dishes like swordfish or pasta con le sarde (pasta with sardines).

Final Thoughts

Sicily is one of those places that create a life-long bond, that remains with you in time, memories, flavors and emotions.

This is only a 3-day itinerary, you have so much more to explore on this delightful island.

It’s your first time or your tenth, Sicily is always full of new possibilities.
