The Perfect 3-Day Cancun Itinerary for Beach Lovers

For beach bums like me, Cancun is paradise.

The soft white sands, clear turquoise waters, and constant sunshine make it one of my favorite places to kick back.

My first trip to Cancun was like walking into a postcard.

But Cancun is much more than beautiful beaches.

It’s a dynamic city with intriguing Mayan history, a vibrant nightlife scene and food that’ll leave your taste buds wanting more.

This one’s for the person whose mind-set is all about beach life — with a little adventure and culture in between.

I created this 3-day itinerary to help you strike a balance between relaxation and exploration, packed with all the insider tips I wish I’d had on my first visit to this stunning city.

Here’s what you need to know to maximize your beach getaway in Cancun.

Day 1: Welcome to Paradise

Morning: Walk Along the Beach and Breakfast

Begin your day with a dawn stroll on Playa Delfines, one of Cancun’s most unspoiled strands.

At dawn, this spot is quiet, with stunning views of the sunrise.

Soak up the peaceful vibe before making your way to a beachfront café such as Café Nader for a hearty Mexican breakfast.

I would suggest chilaquiles — fried tortilla, salsa, egg.

Afternoon: Beach Heaven at Playa Norte

A brief ferry ride brings you to Isla Mujeres and Playa Norte.

With shallow, crystalline water perfect for swimming, this is a postcard beach.

Sit back to sip a fresh coconut and rent a beach lounger to take in the views.

And don’t forget your sunscreen and a good book — a great place for lounging.

Evening Printmaking & Seafood dinner by the water

Back in Cancun in time for dinner at Lorenzillo’s, a well-known seafood place with waterfront seating.

Their lobster dishes are a must-try.

Wrap up your first day with a leisurely walk of the Hotel Zone to soak in the sights and sounds and sparkle of lights.

Day 2: Adventure and Exploration

Morning: Snorkeling MUSA (Underwater Museum of Art)

Plunge into adventure by visiting MUSA, Cancun’s one-of-a-kind underwater sculpture park.

To discover the intriguing works that lay beneath the surface of the Caribbean Sea, we recommend booking a guided snorkeling or diving trip.

It is a memorable experience, and a terrific way to start your day.

Afternoon: Explore the El Rey Ancient Ruins

Get out of the water and get to know Cancun’s history at El Rey Archaeological Zone.

This small, though rich in history, site of Mayan ruins is nestled right in the Hotel Zone.

A quick tour takes less than an hour and offers a peek into ancient Mayan life.

Evening: Sunset and Dinner Cruise

Book a sunset cruise for a magical night on the water.

Several of these tours include dinner, drinks and live music as you cruise along the coast.

Relishing the sight of the sun disappearing below the horizon among the sea is an experience you will never forget.

Day 3: Beach Time and Goodbye

Paddleboarding at Nichupté Lagoon, Morning

Everything on your last day: Start with a serene stand-up paddleboard out on Nichupté Lagoon.

The placid waters also make it a great place for beginners, and the dense mangroves create a beautiful backdrop.

You can even see some wildlife along the way.

2:00p — Beach Club at Mandala Beach

For a more spirited beach day visit Mandala Beach Club.

Soak in the sun to the sounds of DJ-curated music, sipping cocktails while lazing on luxury loungers.

Get a taste of their tropical ceviche for a light but flavor-packed lunch.

Night: Goodbye dinner and a night out

End your trip with dinner in Puerto Madero, where you’ll find Argentinean-style steaks and waterfront vistas.

For nightlife, head to Coco Bongo for one of Cancun’s famous high-energy shows.

It’s the best way to cap off your Cancun trip on a high.note
